Does Face Oil Go on The Face Before or After Moisturizer?
If face oil isn’t a part of your regular skin care routine you are absolutely missing out. In fact, it’s probably what’s getting in the way of you getting glowy, perfectly hydrated skin. If you’ve been avoiding oils it’s probably because you don’t think your oily skin needs more oil, or that you’re not sure when to use them or if you should apply them before or after your moisturizer. Whether you're a face oil newbie or you’re looking to update your skin care knowledge, read on for everything you need to know about face oils, how and when to apply them in your skin care routine and discover some must-have products that will give you results. Let’s begin.
What do facial oils do exactly?
Facial oils are seemingly everywhere right now, and they have a long history in skin care. In fact, the ancient Egyptians reportedly used oils in cosmetics as early as 4500 B.C.E. But what do face oils actually do?
The basic idea is that putting an oil on your face will help supplement the natural oils your skin is (or isn’t) producing in an effort to add moisture to your skin and help repair the barrier that keeps that moisture in. Depending on the type of oil—jojoba, maracuja, coconut, argan, tea tree, etc.—the oil may naturally have other purported benefits, like anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties, but those are bonuses. The biggest benefit that comes with oil is the moisturizing benefit.
Does Face Oils Go On Before Or After Moisturizer?
This is by far the most highly debated topic amongst skin care professionals, but long story short, it really depends on how you're using them.
When you skin needs hydration you need water-based products but water evaporates. So for that reason apply oil on your face last. Oil is impermeable, a.k.a. not easily penetrated. Water is repelled by it.
The correct way to use your face oils is to use the moisturizer first then pat on your oil. It’ll let the water melt into your skin and not evaporate. The other reason why oil goes last is that it will eventually sink into your skin, reinforcing your moisture barrier.
If you’re wearing SPF apply oil after.
When Should You Apply Face Oil?
Facial oils are best used daily and when they're most easily absorbed: at night.
However if you have dry skin, you may benefit from adding a few drops of facial oil to your morning routine to layer under your makeup. Dry skin struggles to make enough sebum, which is why applying facial oil in the morning and even at noon may improve the overall condition of your skin.
How Should You Apply Face Oil?
Patting is more effective than rubbing. You don’t want to use too much. Oils spread very easily so only a few drops are needed to do the trick. If you have oily skin patting is best since this acts as a top coat without getting directly into the pores. If you have dry skin, you can massage a few drops over your moisturizer into the skin.
If you want to add a bit more relaxation into your skin care routine you can massage the product into your skin in upward and outward motions to relieve tension and encourage lymphatic drainage throughout the face.

Sikeci Oil (ALEURITES MOLUCCANA) - Sikeci seed oil contains high levels of the linoleic and alpha-linolenic fatty acids, vitamins and anti-oxidants that help soothe dry skin. It penetrates deeply into the stratum corneum and slows trans-epidermal water loss therefore being an excellent moisturizer.
